Play England have launched a fantastic ‘Love Outdoor Play’ campaign for Valentines Day. Basically if you love outdoor play – like we do – send your MP or Councillor a Valentines card asking them to love outdoor play too – full details here http://loveoutdoorplay.net/takeaction/ask-your-mp-councillors-to-love-outdoor-play/.
Why do we love outdoor play? Well here’s a quick run down of the LT team’s favourite outdoor play memories, which really shows the diversity of outdoor fun that’s ready to be enjoyed:
Julie: My favourite memory is building dams in the stream….
Alan: For me it’s playing with the kids in the local park, round the corner from our house on a warm sunny evening after work with the smell of newly cut grass – and of course being able to act like a kid myself.
Alannah: I was a bit of a Peppa Pig fan for me it being age 4 and sploshing in the puddles on my granddad’s farm and playing trolls under the bridge.
Ruth: As a youngster the highlight of every walk was climbing the octopus tree, a 100ft (honest) beech, (with two dogs) in the local woods.
Mike: For me it’s the road outside our houses; growing up it was our Wembley Stadium, Lords, Central Park (old home of Wigan RL) and a venue for football, cricket, tennis, rugby…. well all possible sports.
Helen: For me it’s building a den in the lilac bushes by the river.
Su: My favourite outdoor place to go is Brownsea Island. Located just off Poole Harbour in Dorset it is the perfect place to escape from the stresses of modern life. Watching the faces of my grandchildren, Lucy and Harry, as we explored and played in the woodlands and then shared our picnic with the wildlife, peacocks and red squirrels, was magical. These are moments treasured forever!
Jonathan’s answer….. well that’s a different type of play we’re just not going to go there with this blog.
So outdoor play means – sport, relaxation, adventure, playing with the kids or grandkids – all memories that last a lifetime. So if you’ve got treasured memories like these join the Play England campaign and help make sure the next generation can love outdoor play too.
